## Jordan's supplied finding is more specific than a label

Jordan is a fictional adult\. The clinician has already assessed excessive vertical overlap and recorded a front tooth contacting soft tissue\. These are supplied professional findings in an educational example\. The guide is explaining their meaning, rather than asking visitors to classify their own teeth\.

The excessive overlap describes the vertical relationship of the front teeth when they meet\. The recorded contact identifies something the clinician wants to address in that relationship\. The two facts belong together in the explanation: one describes the overlap, and the other identifies a contact that matters in this person's assessment\.

The AAO distinguishes ordinary overlap from excessive overlap and describes soft\-tissue contact as part of the deep\-bite discussion\. That does not turn every overlap into a problem or establish the cause of a visitor's concern\.

## Reduce the recorded overlap and contact, preserve useful contacts

The clinician's stated goal is to reduce Jordan's excessive front\-tooth overlap and the recorded soft\-tissue contact while preserving useful contacts elsewhere\. This supplies both a change target and something to maintain\. Reducing the front overlap is not the same as trying to eliminate all contact between the teeth\.

Useful contacts elsewhere are part of how the clinician considers the whole bite\. An explanation that mentions only the front appearance would leave out this supplied objective\. Jordan can now describe the purpose positively: change the assessed front relationship while keeping the other useful contacts in view\.

That is why an appliance discussion should refer back to the assessed goal\. The same named appliance category can be used in different individual plans; its name alone does not identify which tooth\-position or contact change is being proposed\.

## Assessment connects the visible relationship with the actual proposal

The clinician considers the individual's teeth and bite, relevant jaw relationships, records and circumstances\. Those findings inform what the proposal is intended to change\. Jordan's example supplies an assessed adult situation; it does not give a jaw diagnosis, a remaining\-growth finding or a universal set of records for everyone\.

Keep the directions distinct while reading\. Vertical overlap concerns upper\-to\-lower coverage\. Horizontal overjet concerns front\-to\-back projection\. If a real clinician explains a separate jaw contribution, that contribution needs its own purpose in the proposal\. The [coordinated\-care guide](<https://orthodonticjawguide.com/different-jobs-in-combined-care>) explains how separate jobs can fit together without assuming that Jordan or the reader needs combined treatment\.

## Jordan can explain the target before choosing between proposals

Jordan's interpretation is: “My clinician has identified excessive vertical overlap and recorded a front\-tooth soft\-tissue contact\. The aim is to reduce that overlap and contact while preserving useful contacts elsewhere\.” This is the meaning of the supplied goal, not a measurement Jordan calculated or a direction to change an appliance\.

The [next lesson compares the two assessed proposals](</aligners-and-fixed-appliance-proposals>) against that same target\. The useful comparison starts with what the proposed work is for, then considers the responsibilities that come with each arrangement\.
